Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is defined as a persistent ear infection with drainage (> 3 months’ duration) in the presence of a tympanic membrane perforation. Typically, associated with conductive hearing loss, untreated CSOM can result in serious complications such as mastoiditis, facial nerve paralysis, cholesteatoma formation, dizziness, and intracranial infections.
When medical management (antibiotics & ear cleanings) fails, surgery is indicated to patch the perforated eardrum, remove infected bone/soft tissues, and treat complications such as cholesteatoma.
The main goal of treatment is to create a dry ear that is free of infection. Hearing is typically improved but may be unchanged or sometimes worsen.
