Mixed hearing loss occurs when a conductive hearing loss happens at the same time as a sensorineural hearing loss. Mixed hearing loss means multiple parts of the ear are affected and there may be damage to the outer or middle ear, as well as the inner ear or auditory nerve. Causes of mixed hearing loss depend on the areas of the ear that are affected. For example, if you have an age-related sensorineural hearing loss but also have fluid in your middle ear from an ear infection, this would be considered a mixed hearing loss.

Our highly skilled audiologists will evaluate and diagnose mixed hearing loss through a comprehensive audiologic evaluation. This includes pure tone testing (air and bone conduction), speech audiometry, word recognition testing, acoustic reflexes and tympanometry. Our audiologists will counsel you on your hearing loss and review treatment options. Treatment of mixed hearing loss depends on the cause of the hearing loss; however, options may include medical or surgical intervention, conventional hearing aids, bone anchored hearing aids, and cochlear implants. Our audiologists will counsel you on your hearing loss and review treatment options.
