Our team works together to help patients manage the disease as well as the impact it can have on daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multiple Sclerosis<\/strong> is a disease that occurs when the body\u2019s own immune system attacks the thin lining that covers nerve fibers (myelin) in the brain and spinal cord, causing scarring.  This scarring disrupts the communication between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most common symptoms of MS are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/neurotucson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/couplesmiling.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-981\" srcset=\"https:\/\/neurotucson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/couplesmiling.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/neurotucson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/couplesmiling-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Numbness<\/li><li>Dizziness or vertigo<\/li><li>Walking, balance or coordination problems<\/li><li>Fatigue<\/li><li>Emotional changes and memory problems<\/li><li>Vision problems<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is no cure for MS, medications are available to help slow the progression of the disease, treat flare-ups and manage symptoms.  Because MS can vary widely from person to person, our caring team of experts work with each individual patient to arrive at a treatment plan designed specifically to meet their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of MS, like fatigue, sensitivity to heat, memory problems and disability can impact many aspects of the patient\u2019s daily lives.  We spend time with our patients to learn about their challenges, listen to their fears and help them develop strategies to maintain the best possible work and family life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neurotucson.com\/bio\/francisco-valdivia\/\" data-type=\"bio\" data-id=\"512\">Francisco Valdivia, MD<\/a>, CNS adult neurologist, is a member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers and a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist. As a member of CMSC and as a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist, Dr. Valdivia must be engaged in the comprehensive care of persons with multiple sclerosis and have a special interest in MS research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CMSC is an international clearinghouse for research results, the latest treatments, clinical trials, and patient education programs. As a member, CMSC provides Dr. Valdivia with the most current information about MS and gives him the opportunity to be involved directly in shaping the future of MS care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Join Our Support Groups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Center for Neurosciences is host to two support groups. On the second Tuesday of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. we host the Parkinson\u2019s Support Group. On the second Wednesday of each month we host the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group which is held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The groups meet to share concerns, fears and experiences as well as strategies to help manage their daily lives. There is no need to be a Center for Neurosciences patient to participate.
